History
The German Shepherd was developed by German soldier captain Max von Stephanitz at the end of the 19th century Karlsruhe, Germany. The aim was to develop a very capable working dog with courage, intelligence and guarding skills. Selectively bred German sheepdog varieties were used along with the collie to create perfect shepherd dog. The German shepherd has been used as a war dog, service dog, guide dog, search and rescue dog. There is a common misconception that the breed has wolf ancestors. Some breeders tried to interbreed wolfs but the experiment went wrong as the crossbred dogs could not be domesticated.
