Introduction
Dachshunds are funny and comical the way they look and act. They are one of the most celebrated dog breeds on the planet having perfect attitude to tune in with family. Their small size and long length resemble hot dogs. Originally hotdogs were called 'dachshund sausages' before shortened to hot dogs. The Dachshund has a quick intelligent and definite sense of humor. George Meredith, the English poet described them as a "Wagging Humorist". They make an affectionate companion and an alert guardian but they are not so good with small children as they do have a tendency to snore.
There are three varieties of Dachshunds, the smooth, the wire-haired and the long-haired. With each of these varieties, there are three sizes, standard, miniature and rabbit size.
History
The Dachshund was perfected at the end of the 19th century. their ancient ancestor was known as Teckel and Germans have retained their ancient name. The Dachshunds were developed for hunting badgers. They have acutely sensitive nose and short legs which keep them low to the ground making them highly efficient to follow their trail. They are still used in Great Britain, Germany and Switzerland for sports hunting.

Temperament
The Dachshunds are curious, clever, lively, affectionate and brave by nature. The Dachshund has a tendency to bite and show dominance over other dogs. The habit of barking at the least noise makes them best guard dogs. The long-haired variety is more gentle as compared to others. They are stubborn and want to do things their way. But with patience and persistence, they can be trained to be great loving pets.

Daily Care
Dachshunds are one of the healthiest breeds. They are average shedders so grooming requirements are not much. Dachshunds are very active dogs, they need daily walks to stay fit. Their long ears require regular attention and cleaning. The wired-haired and long-haired require brushing and combing once a week.
