The Rottweiler's name comes from the town of Rottweil in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. They are believed to be descendants of cattle droving dogs used by the Roman army to handle the troops as an on-the-hoof meat supply. The Rottweiler’s ability was utilized to the fullest as a guard dog and herder. The cattle merchants used to take their Rottweilers along as they usually carried large sums of money. As police protection was non existent , they fastened their purses to their dog's collar as they knew nobody would dare to lay hands on Rottweilers. They have been also used as police dogs, army dogs and as boar hunters.
