The breed was developed by crossing Flat Coated Retriever with now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel and later adding bloodhound and Irish Setter. The aim was to develop a breed, able to retrieve game on both land and cold water. They have excellent sense of smell to detect on both water and thickets making them tenacious trackers.  Their soft mouth helped to retrieve without damaging the hunted game.
